What does perfect mean anyway?

I am a perfectionist. My philosophy has always been if I can’t do it perfectly then there’s no point in doing it at all. Boy did I miss out on doing a lot of things. The truth is I’m never perfect. What is perfect? Who decides what perfect is? If we don’t really ever truly know what perfect is then how can we reach it? We can’t and we need to start accepting that.

I would research and research before I would start anything new. I took two months researching how to start a blog and listening to podcasts about starting blogs because I wanted it to be perfect when I did start it. Then I realized if I don’t just do it then I’ll never start this blog because there’s no way to reach that perfect status. The blogs I read are not perfect but I enjoy reading them still. So this blog is my step toward my new motto “done is better than perfect”.

If I didn’t have time to do a whole thirty minute workout I would say screw it and not do anything. But now ten minutes is better than nothing. If my kids’ clothes didn’t match or their hair wasn’t straight in their ponytail, I would run around like a crazy person changing everything and end up rushing out the door to be on time. Now getting out the door calmly without grumpy kids (and a grumpy mom)  is better than the kids looking picture perfect.

Stop aiming for perfect

Stop aiming for perfect because you will never get there. There is no such thing. Aim for getting the task done. Aim for spending quality time with your kids and for just staying sane throughout the day. But most of all aim for doing what you love without holding yourself back because you are not doing it perfectly. Just do away with perfect.

I too am a recovering perfectionist – I’m learning to let out my inner imperfectionist 🙂
Interestingly, I also started my blog to overcome some of that perfectionism. I always wanted to be a writer, but could never get things perfect, so that was that. Once I paid to host a website I had to keep putting it out there or it was a waste of money – I hate wasting money even more than I hate not getting things perfect.
Here’s to a journey beyond perfectionism!

Thank you so much! I understand what you mean about not wanting to do anything till it’s perfect so you just don’t ever do it. I’m so glad you were able to take the leap. I hate wasting money too so hopefully that keeps pushing us to not care about perfect and just do it!
